The seminars focused on HSRC projects that were underway in 2016-2017 and related work being done elsewhere at the time of the seminar. The seminars addressed latest research, identified research gaps, suggested new research agendas and explored potential policy relevance. The data set contains the data from the learner background questionnaire, e.g. Learner profile, support received and learner participation, learner education and other background, school environment, reading proficiency, textbooks and learning materials, English and Mathematics class conditions.

There were 378 variables and 6196 cases (2386 grade 9 and 3810 grade 11 learners).

Slight differences occur between the realized sample as stated in the reports and those that appear in the published data. Cases were omitted in the learner questionnaire data if a paired learner test was not available. Learners who were absent on the testing would not have their background information included in the data.

The harmonised core module data are available in the combined data set. The questions contained in the core modules of the two SASAS questionnaires for 2003 were asked of 7000 respondents, while the remaining rotating modules were asked of a half sample of approximately 3500 respondents each.

The combined data set contains 4980 records and 269 variables.

Core topics included in the questionnaires are: democracy, identity, public services, health status, HIV/AIDS, health behaviour, moral issues, crime, voting, demographics and other classificatory variables, nature of families and family authority.

This version of the combined dataset should be used when analysis is to be performed at individual level.

The file contains the individual learner literacy scores as well as the parent or caregiver responses to the home questionnaire

The data set contains 3981 cases and 181 variables.

The file contains the principal literacy responses to the school background questionnaire.

The data set has 16 cases and 63 variables.

Individual teacher and classroom contextual background information questionnaire are contained in the file.

The data set contains 176 cases and 145 variables.
