About 803563 tweets were extracted from the following campaigns: #RhodesMustFall, #OpenStellenbosch, #FeesMustFall and #OutsourcingMustFall.

• What was the relationship between social media activism and student leadership?
• How did social media use reflect and/or impact on protests on the ground?
