Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) Research Seminars 2014-2015

The seminars focused on HSRC projects that were underway in 2014-2015 and related work being done elsewhere at the time of the seminar. The seminars addressed latest research, identified research gaps, suggested new research agendas and explored potential policy relevance. This data set includes the proceedings of the 10 seminars of 2014-2015. The following themes were covered:

The moral ecology of South Africa's township youth (IKASI) 2004-05: Western Cape. Interview 2 - A qualitative study

The data set consists of 35 second transcribed interviews with South Africa's township youth in the Western Cape.

Participants came from one class in a Langa township school, and from one class in a nearby suburban school. The sample is 37, 31 from the township school and 6 from the suburban school. The six participants from the suburban school all live in Langa. Not all participants from the township school live in Langa.

An Outcomes Evaluation of the NDC fruit processors factory in Tzaneen (NDC) 2016: Suppliers

This study did an evaluation of the socio-economic spillovers of the introduction of a fruit processing factory in Tzaneen. The data file contains responses from the suppliers to the NDC fruit processors factory. The data contains information regarding the supplier's demographics, business activity, job creation, source of merchandise and the market environment.

The data set contains 62 records and 66 variables.

South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS) 2003: Questionnaire 1 - All provinces

The questions contained in the core modules of the two SASAS questionnaires for 2003 (demographics and core thematic issues) were asked of 7000 respondents, while the remaining rotating modules were asked of a half sample of approximately 3500 respondents each.

The data set contains 2497 records and 369 variables.

Topics included in the questionnaires are: democracy, identity, public services-education, health status, HIV/AIDS, health behaviour, moral issues, crime, voting, demographics and other classificatory variables, nature of families and family authority.

Rotating modules are: health status, HIV/AIDS and health behaviour, communication, International Social Surveys Programme (ISSP) module: national identity, democracy part 2, poverty, generational and gender attitudes and domestic violence, interpersonal violence.
